Obituary for John Hilton Burgis

It is with great sadness that the family of John Hilton Burgis announces his sudden passing on Thursday February 23rd, 2023. John was the beloved husband and best friend to Carol Burgis for almost 54 years. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Lisa Nye and her husband Brad, Kevin, and his wife Carrie. John was a cherished and adored Papa to Daphne, Brandon, Mary-Kate, Paige, and Alexander. Dear brother to David and his wife Elaine. John was a special uncle to Julie (Tom) and Kyle (Emily), and their children Natalie, Viola, Brynn, and Evan. John is predeceased by his loving parents Harold and Bessie Burgis. He was the son-in-law to the late Frank Neuschl, and the late Joan Hayes (Dave).

John was the Executive Vice-President of Finance & Operations at Global Television Network for over 28 years. John will be remembered as a dedicated, loyal, and hard-working executive who was instrumental in shaping the company over many years. Also, a special mention to dear friends Cam and the late Mary Johnston and families.

Orillia, Ontario was a special place for John. He spent lots of cherished times at his childhood cottage on Lake Couchiching with his parents, dear brother David (Elaine) and friends (David & Karen, Lorrie & Carolyn, Larry, and Gord). This is where he met the love of his life Carol. They later bought their own place on Lake Couchiching spending quality time with his family and friends. John enjoyed many boat cruises and sunsets with Wendy and the late Patrick Slattery. He also thoroughly enjoyed his time in the beautiful British Columbia with longtime friend Ann Chong and her children Richard Breakell (Yoo-Hyun), Christine (Matt), Jennifer (Jeremy) and their families. Also, a special mention to dear friends Joan and the late Rick Lumley and families.

John spent his retirement years, during the winter months in sunny Florida surrounded by family and friends. Special acknowledgement goes to Peggi, Peter, Norma, Ron, Sheree, Irene, and Joe for helping to create wonderful times, drives, the beach, meals, and unforgettable memories. At home in Ajax, John and Carol met weekly with their special friends and breakfast club members Aunt Mary, Jane, David and Sarah Hughes, and Irene and Joe Kodderman.

John loved playing golf. He spent many hours on golf courses around the world. However, his most cherished times golfing was with his family and friends at both Cedar Brae Golf Club in Toronto and Tara Golf Club in Florida.

John’s dedication to his grandchildren will always be remembered. He was the Papa that always went the extra mile. He made everything feel special (even his famous sandwiches). John was always proud of their accomplishments both academically and in their extracurricular activities.

John’s religion played a very important role during his lifetime. He was a devoted member of St. Paul’s on-the-Hill Anglican Church. In recent years, he dedicated a great deal of his time to studying the bible and prayer. A special thank you to Father Brian and Canon Stephanie Douglas-Bowman.

John led by example. All would agree that our world is a better place having had John apart of it. He will be fondly remembered by all those who knew him. Family and friends will be received at the BARNES MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME (5295 Thickson Road North, Whitby, Ontario) on Tuesday April 18th, 2023, at 12pm to 1pm (Viewing), followed by the Funeral service and reception. If desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are appreciated.
