Obituary for Joan Eunice Serjeantson

Joan Eunice Serjeantson (nee Carthy)

February 12, 1930 - July 15, 2017

Joan passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on a quiet Saturday afternoon.

Survived by Robert (Bob), her husband of 59 years. Mom will be always loved and missed by her children, Katherine Whyte (James), William Serjeantson (Kim), Karen Serjeantson (Kevin Robertson) and grandchildren, Bill, Leslie, Lindsay, Emily, John, Katherine and Meaghan. Predeceased by her parents, Mary and Harold Carthy as well as her sisters, Katherine Belanger and Irene West and brothers-in-law Hank Belanger, Harold West and Gordon Shires.

Born and raised in Kitchener, she moved to Elliott Lake to begin her teaching career. It was there she met Bob on a blind date and the two moved to Etobicoke after their marriage. The day Bob retired, they moved to the cottage in Utterson. In 2015 Joan moved to Whitby to be closer to her family.

Joan enjoyed socializing with friends, playing cards games, feeding the neighbourhood birds and wildlife, and cuddling with her cat.

Joan’s greatest joy was her children and grandchildren; she wanted them to have every opportunity life had to offer. She always put her family ahead of herself and worked constantly to generously provide for their needs and anything that might make life better for them.

Following Joan’s wishes, she has been cremated. Friends and relatives are invited to join the family for a memorial service to be held at Barnes Funeral Home, 5295 Thickson Rd. N., Whitby on September 16, 2017 at 2:30 pm. Reception to follow. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre, 360 Columbus Rd. E., Whitby, ON L1M 1Z5, or the Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope Transportation Service, or a charity of your choice.
