Obituary for William Leonard Hiscock

A GREAT BROTHER AND A GREAT PIPER

HISCOCK, William Leonard: Died peacefully in Ajax, Ontario on Sunday August 21, 2016. Piper Bill, as he was known by so many, was born on a snowy day in Cornwall, Ontario on April 6, 1949. His proud parents were the late Mae and Wilfred Hiscock. At an early age Bill was introduced to the bagpipes and it became a lifelong passion of his. He won many awards, played in several bands, and performed around the world.

Bill’s passion for the bagpipes was stilled four years ago when he suffered a massive stroke. He was in Lion’s Gate Hospital and Evergreen Rehabilitation Centre in North Vancouver for three long years. Determined to manage on his own he came to Ajax in July 2015 and stayed at the home of his sister June and her partner Terry. His name was on the list for assisted housing in Cornwall.

Bill was resigned to his condition but his greatest regret was that he could no longer play the bagpipes, being paralyzed down the left side. His great joy occurred in July 2016 at the Maxville Highland Games when he sat in his wheelchair and all the bands in the final march past came down the field towards him.

Bill’s passing has affected friends around the world. Surviving him are his sister June Stevenson (Ajax, ON) and partner Terry Nicholls, June’s daughter Laura (Chris), son Lawrence ù9Kristina) and their families; Betty, wife of his older brother the late Nick Myatt, and their children Mary Ann Gokey (John) and Nicholas (Melanie) and their children of Malone, NY.; his cousin Audrey Shearman, Mount Royal, QC; his step-daughter Olya Shah, and most of all his love and friend of over 50 years, Diane Lebrun, North Vancouver and her family.
