Obituary for Jenny Margaret Turner (Annan )

Our loving mother Jenny has taken her final curtain call. Jenny passed peacefully in her sleep at Ajax Pickering Hospital supported by her family.

Her kindness, generosity, strength and love were an inspiration to all she met. She was courageous to the end and amazed all with her strength and determination.

Born in Glasgow Scotland, Jenny married her first husband Ron Turner on July 12, 1956. The family immigrated to Canada in 1965 to start a new life in Alberta. While raising her four children in the wild west of Hanna, Alberta, Jenny quickly became a driving force in the community. She rose to become president of the Hospital Auxiliary of Alberta where she was the key fundraiser for many charities. Jenny was instrumental in starting the Hanna Players. Inspired by Canadian playwright John Murrell, Jenny started a new career as star of stage and screen.

In 1971 the family moved to Sudbury Ontario where Jenny continued to drive the growth of Theatre in Canada. In partnership with Tony Lloyd, Jenny founded the Sudbury Theatre Centre, Northern Ontario's longest running professional theatre. Jenny inspired many young people to pursue a career in theatre. Jenny served as artistic director of Press Theatre in St. Catherine’s and worked in many theatres including Manitoba Theatre Centre, Totem Pole Playhouse and Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia.
Star of stage and screen, her most memorable acting and directing credits from across Canada and the United States include: Lady Bracknell in the Importance of Being Earnest, Mrs. Borden in Blood Relations, Politics in the Park, On Golden Pond, Oklahoma, Same Time Next Year, A Child's Christmas in Wales & The Women of Windsor.

A force to be reckoned with, Jenny had a presence she carried with her both on and off the stage. Along with her sharp wit and insightful mind, her extraordinary senses and outspoken nature, this made her a memorable personality to all she met. A determined supporter of what she believed in, a staunch friend, a challenging opponent, Jenny did nothing by halves.

Jenny was a marvelous cook and amazing singer; the ultimate entertainer. All who experienced her hospitality remember her as vivacious, generous and a joy to be with. Her love of classical music lasted a lifetime - a legacy that remains with all of her children to this day.

Jenny is survived by her second husband and fellow actor Donald Ewer whom she married on her birthday in 1990. Loving mummy to Roddy Turner (Mary-Frances), Laura Walker(Greg), Karen Tomarchio (Corrado) and Wendy Turner (Bruce), Loving Nana to her grandchildren Robin and Adriana Tomarchio, Ian and Alex McNeill, Corrie and Susie Turner. Loving Sister to Carol Tanner (Alistair) and Jean Forsyth (d.)(Russell).
Thanks to the staff at Ajax Pickering Hospital for their kindness and care and to Bert Murphy for his support and help.

Family and friends will be received at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home 5295 Thickson Rd. N. Whitby 905-655-3662 on Wednesday August 28th from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. A memorial service honouring Jenny’s life will follow in Barnes Chapel at 4:00 p.m.
